ABOUT US
We are a community-led group for local action against climate change.
We are currently structured as a CUCAN core team with Uley Trees and Meadows as an affiliated group.
ABOUT CUCAN
A community-led group for local action against climate change
The Climate Action Network
CUCAN was started by a small group of Coaley and Uley residents in 2019 following a declaration of a ‘climate change emergency’ by Stroud District Council in November 2018. We are part of a wider Climate Action Network (CAN) which was instigated by Transition Stroud in response to this declaration. There are many other CAN groups nearby, such as Dursley CAN, Nailsworth CAN and Wotton Area CAN (more information can be found here).
Our Purpose
To reduce the carbon footprint of the villages of Coaley and Uley through a range of community-led projects and events.
How We Work
The CUCAN Core Team consists of around 7 members (including 2 members of UTM) who meet regularly to discuss future and current projects. We hold our AGM in November and our constitution can be found here.
We are also helped in specific projects by a number of other volunteers. For example we have around 5 skilled repairers (in addition to the core team) that we can call on to help us at our quarterly Repair Cafes. If you would like to join the core team or help on a specific project, please get in touch using the button below:
We are supported by Coaley Parish Council, grants and private donations. The repair cafe is self-funded through donations made for the repairs.
about uley trees and meadows
A group focussed on improving the biodiversity in Uley
Uley Trees and Meadows (UTM) started in response to an offer to CUCAN of land for tree planting in 2023. From a small group of volunteers planting trees on a single site, UTM blossomed into a large group of 20+ members who have helped with many biodiversity projects in Uley. Since 2023, UTM have planted more than 500 tree saplings over 4 sites; written and implemented a biodiversity plan for the Parish Council; created and managed several biodiversity patches throughout the village and created a Biodiversity Map to display existing wildlife corridors and identify any gaps. For more information about these UTM projects, please click here.
Our Purpose
To support and improve the biodiversity in Uley through projects aimed at building and managing wildlife habitats and feeding opportunities.
How We Work
The UTM core team consists of approximately 6 people (2 of whom are also CUCAN members) who meet regularly to discuss future and current projects.
We are also helped in specific planting and maintenance projects by a number of member volunteers. Planting/maintenance sessions are planned and dates shared with volunteers on social media, who then sign up to help. If you would like to join the core team or help as a member volunteer, please get in touch using the button below:
